Roland Williams grew up facing significant challenges in Rochester, New York. Raised by young parents who never married, he navigated a community rife with drugs, gangs, and poverty. "I was grateful for things like sports, which gave me a positive outlet," Roland says. His journey wasn’t smooth. His high school football career was riddled with obstacles, including a significant injury during his junior year. However, these struggles only fortified his mental strength.

Roland attributes much of his success to what he calls "mental muscles," essential traits and habits that anyone can develop:

  1. Unbreakable Belief Muscle: The ability to believe in extraordinary success despite past failures.
  2. Ultimate Truth Muscle: Honest self-assessment and goal setting.
  3. Conscious Courage Muscle: The bravery to take uncomfortable but necessary steps.
  4. Intentional Teamwork Muscle: Cultivating beneficial relationships and avoiding negative influences.
  5. Passionate Perseverance Muscle: Maintaining energy and focus in pursuit of long-term goals.

These mental muscles propelled Roland from the challenges of his upbringing to the pinnacle of professional sports.

Roland's rookie season with the St. Louis Rams saw the team finish last in the NFL. However, the very next year, they not only improved but won the Super Bowl—a feat unprecedented in NFL history. This turnaround wasn’t luck but a result of strategic, collective belief and effort. Coach Dick Vermeil played a crucial role, fostering honesty and unity among the players. “He made you feel like we were a football family,” Roland says. This emotional bond strengthened the team's resolve, leading them to victory against the odds. Roland shares wisdom gained from NFL legends:

  • Jerry Rice: Known for his incredible work ethic, Jerry took every practice and walkthrough as seriously as a game. His focus and precision served as a model for commitment and excellence.
  • Kurt Warner and Isaac Bruce: Their faith and human kindness created a strong spiritual and emotional bond within the team. This camaraderie was critical in helping the team achieve greatness.

Post-NFL, Roland founded the Champions Academy, focusing on at-risk youth in Rochester. The program’s impact is significant, with dramatic improvements in students' GPA, financial literacy, and social relationships. "I realized we have an epidemic that needed true intervention," he states. The Academy provides a foundation for at-risk teens to build their own "mental muscles" and break the cycle of poverty and underachievement.

Roland is not just resting on his laurels. He continues to pursue greatness through his philanthropic efforts and his latest entrepreneurial venture, Pocket Square Doctor, aimed at revolutionizing men's fashion with customizable luxury pocket squares.

Roland closes with a simple but profound piece of advice: "Do your best and forget about the rest." This mantra encapsulates his journey and the wisdom he's gained along the way.

Roland invites companies and individuals to support the Champions Academy through sponsorships. By helping fund these programs, you can contribute to the transformation of at-risk youth in Rochester and ensure a brighter future for the next generation.
